V. Suggestions for Trip Preparation (for reference only)
Vaccinations:
Yellow fever required if traveling from a yellow fever endemic country. You may want to obtain malaria pills prior to arriving. Yellow fever only if traveling from an infected area required for entry. For repellent some people use DEET and others use Medi Soft (available locally). It would be wise to sleep under nets and be careful, especially in the evening and nights. Consult your doctors.
Banking and Funds:
ATMs are available at major shopping centers and at the airport. The rates at the airport are not excessive. Please clear matters with your bank before arriving. It’s not necessary to obtain Tanzanian shilling prior to arrival provided you are certain your bank card will work for withdrawals. The local shilling is not a hard currency, and some places will take dollars, but the local currency is always the best. Rates abroad are much higher.
HOW to GET to Zanzibar:
For Ferry:
Ferry is about $25 to $30 and will bring you into Stone Town area from which you may walk if you choose to your hotel or get a taxi. That is around $25 to $35 one way and about 2.5 hours ride.
If you fly in, I recommend a flight from Dar es Salaam (DAR) to Zanzibar (ZNZ). For a round trip it should be $50 to $80 and 20 minutes each way flying. You will need a taxi to and from the airport. It is about $30 to $35 each way for the taxi unless you want to be dropped off at the garage and walk and then you will save about $10 to $15. It is safe and only about a five-minute walk on tarred road. You can use UBER in Dar es Salaam but not in Zanzibar. UBER drivers will not go into the airport parking lot, thus you will be deposited at the garage.
For the Ferry:
https://www.zanzibarquest.com/ferries-flights/ferry-dar-es-salaam-zanzibar.html Zanzibar Quest has online booking.
Another company is: https://azammarine.com/
For airplane:
Precision and Air Tanzania are the best alternatives from Dar es Salaam. Check prices. Never pay over $100 for that flight. If you are headed to another part of Africa after the conference, I suggest you use Ethiopian Air or Air Tanzania. Kenya Airways is a bit iffy. There is also Air Rwanda. Avoid Air Zimbabwe. South African Air has been re-established but does not fly as often or to as many routes as before.
Other info:
Dress lightly but avoid shorts in non-beach/tourist areas. Dark blue and black clothing may attract tsetse flies, so it’s best to avoid those colors if possible. Whites can be difficult to keep dust-free. Khakis, tans, lights greens, light blues, greys are all appropriate for the bush. At night, expect mosquitos. In June the temperature in Zanzibar is around 82 degrees (28 C) with limited variation during the day compared to night. It is usually two- or three-degrees cooler at night.
Respect the local cultural and religious practices.
